About The Morgan Library & Museum

The Morgan Library & Museum is home to the once private collection of rare materials that Pierpont Morgan—a preeminent collector during the early 1900s—acquired during his lifetime. His library was built between 1902 and 1906. Unfortunately, Morgan died only years later in 1913, leaving his expansive library in the hands of his son, J.P. Morgan, Jr.

In 1924, Morgan Jr. realized his father’s private library was too great a treasure to keep private, so The Morgan Library & Museum was born and became one of the most monumental cultural gifts in American history.

Now—after adding more than 75,000 square feet to the library—it is the three-story home of a magnificent library, a gallery, an education center, and the Gilder Lehrman Hall, making The Morgan Library & Museum a must-see center for fine-arts and literature.
