2018 MINI Cooper Hardtop Trim Level Review
If there’s one thing that MINI knows, it’s how to create a car with a lot of style and a lot of fun personality. There’s a new model year arriving in showrooms, and the manufacturer has not only carried forward that legacy, but added a lot of welcome practicality to the model. Manhattan-area drivers in places like Queens and the Bronx are naturally curious as to exactly what this means.
Like every vehicle out there, the new MINI hardtop is available in multiple trim levels and the various features are spread among them. Let’s take a look at the different features, options, driver aids, infotainment, comfort and other touches you get with each of the MINI Cooper Hardtop trim levels. MINI Cooper Hardtop Trim Levels
The MINI Cooper Hardtop this year is available in either 2-door or 4-door configurations, and in several trim levels. The 4-door comes only in Cooper and Cooper S, while the 2-door also adds a range-topping John Cooper Works level trim. The 4-door designates John Cooper Works as add-on packages and there are two different versions.
The Cooper Level trim is the base entry level, and is driven by a 3-cylinder 1.5L turbocharged engine which gets 134 horsepower with 162 lb-ft in torque. Both are front wheel drive, and drivers have the choice of manual or automatic transmissions (6-speed). In terms of features you get alloy wheels, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, leatherette upholstery, 60/40 split-folding rear seatbacks and height-adjust front seats.
Technology-wise, you get a cooled glovebox, automatic headlights, rearview camera, heated mirrors, automatic wipers, rear parking sensors, electronic limited-slip differential, dual-zone automatic climate control, and an infotainment system with 6.5-inch screen, smartphone app functionality, Bluetooth®, six speakers, USB port, and HD Radio™.
Cooper S Level
At the Cooper S Level you add a few new sport-tuned functions, like a hood scoop and dual-center mounted exhaust tips, as well as a 2.0L turbo four cylinder engine which ups your power to 189 horses and 207 lb-ft of torque. You also get LED fog lights, adjustable drive modes, and sport seating.
John Cooper Works
The John Cooper Works trim is available only on the 2-door, but the 4-door offers two John Cooper Works packages. The trim level ups the engine once more to 228 horses and 236 lb-ft of torque. You also get 17-inch wheels and heavy-duty Brembo® brakes, as well as a sport-tuned suspension. It adds a more aerodynamic body, spoiler, LED headlights, sport steering wheel, and special seats.
The packages for the 4-door are exterior and interior. The exterior gives you aerodynamic body, black alloy wheels, sport-tuned suspension and drivetrain, and a spoiler. Interior gives you a sport steering wheel, stainless steel trim, sport seats, and anthracite headliner.
There are a number of standalone add-ons and packages, including the Premium Package with 12-speaker Harman Kardon® audio, sport package with special driving mode adjustments, technology package with tons of safety features and larger 8.8-inch touchscreen, cold weather package, fully loaded package, special edition packages, and more. Automated parking, Head-Up Display, and Adaptive Cruise Control are all available as standalone additions.
